Treaty Education Alliance hosted an education conference on October 20, 2023. The theme of the conference was chosen based on the feedback that was gathered from community engagement sessions and what stakeholders chose to be the most important needs in their communities.  Language and language revitalization is the highest need.

Communities that are part of TEA have a diverse in terms of language which consists of Plains Cree, Dakota, Nakota, and Saulteaux. To accommodate for all the languages that are present in our communities, presenters were sought out based on their life work in promoting and nourishing our Indigenous Languages. Dr. Kevin Lewis, Lorena Lynn Cote, Kevin Tacan, Willie Ermine, Carla Bison, Robert (Jr.) McArthur, presented so passionately and inspired all who were in attendance.

The spirit of the languages was very present at the conference. There were nearly 300 registrants that attended the conference and they all held their seats from the beginning, to the very end of the conference. TEA Staff did a very awesome job in organizing the conference.

To see more photos of the conference, a huge album was uploaded to the Treaty Education Alliance Facebook page.

I want to give a shout out to Muskowekwan Grade 7 student Landon Moise, and Fishing Lake Elder Melva Desjarlais, for their excellence in representing the Treaty Education Alliance and their First Nations so beautifully during the recent special luncheon hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan on October 20, 2018. This special luncheon was held in honour of Her Honour, Julie Payette, the Governor General of Canada’s first visit to Saskatchewan.

During the visit, Landon told the Governor General that he was happy to meet an astronaut, and that he knew she has a special relationship to First Nations peoples because of the Treaty. Elder Melva reminded the Governor General of the pain and suffering that was caused over many generations through the residential schools and that the time for healing is now.

TEA was honoured to be among five recipients specially chosen to meet the Governor General.
