Inherent & Treaty Rights-Based Education
Why is a new system needed?
- Provincial education systems were not designed for First Nations and will never meet the needs of First Nations.
- Provincial funding formulas do not capture the unique needs of on-Reserve schools, an Inherent & Treaty Rights-Based system will;
- Address the long-standing gaps through time unique to the context of First Nations and the impacts of colonial systems.
- Honour and uphold the special relationship First Nations have with the Crown of Great Britain through Treaty and hold Canada accountable for its role in being obligated to the Treaty, specifically the Treaty Right to Education, so-long as Canada wants to exist within Treaty Territory.
- The new system is based on the priorities outlined in the strategic plan and the input of the First Nations (to date).
- The new system is built to be stable and sustainable and;
- Will progressively address long-standing gaps and urgent needs.
- Does not depend on government departments to assume or predict funding for the First Nations.
